KIEDRICH KLOSTERBERG
VDP.ERSTE LAGE®
The name Klosterberg harkens back to the old path that connected Kloster Eberbach and cloister's mills near Eltville, passing through the abbey's properties in Kiedrich.
The Klosterberg in many ways is emblematic of the larger Rheingau and its hillside vineyards in particular, with massive geological diversity within a small area. The numerous stone formations reflect the variable geological history of the Rheingau, which formed primarily through the build-up of sedimentation in the primordial sea of the "Mainz Basin" some 45 million years ago.
Alongside colored slate, the soils of the Klosterberg feature a share of weathered phyllite slate producing a fertile, fine-grained soil that is notably rich in minerals. Sericite gneiss can be found as well, albeit with a lower potential for minerality. Volcanic in nature, it is found exclusively in the hillside vineyards of the Rheingau.
This diverse soil composition produces Rieslings on the Klosterberg that tend toward a rich, almost Baroque opulence.
